In this latest edition of the News Roundup, we look at permits Disney has filed for Walt Disney World, domains that allow us to peek into the company's future and a bunch of smaller news items all mixed together...
UPDATE: We have updated the domains sections with those hinting towards Disney Channel sequels and quite a few others. (8/8/07)
Epcot Loses some DNA
To start off with, we look at our title news item. Over the past week, Disney has been taking down the DNA helix and entrance sign in front of the Wonders of Life pavilion. As of this moment, both structures have been entirely removed while the inside is still being gutted. The pavilion will reopen later this year as the Festival Center for the Food and Wiine Festival, still being called the Wonders of Life pavilion. You can find pictures of the end result here. [
Ticket Prices Go Up
Also at the World, one-day ticket prices have gone up $4 to $71. A 3 percent to 6 percent hike has also been made to the other Magic Your Way tickets. "We strongly believe that Walt Disney World represents a great entertainment value. Our guests agree," spokesman Rick Sylvain said. "In our guests surveys, nine out of 10 rate their theme park experience from good to excellent."
Year of another Million Dreams
Those of you who did not see the Dream Squad this year at Walt Disney World, do not fear. The popular Year of a Million Dreams has been extended for another year. The celebration of dreams has been credited with driving a strong and steady surge of customers to the resorts four theme parks.
"Because it has so resonated with guests, Year of a Million Dreams has helped drive a strong year for Disney Parks and Resorts," spokesman Rick Sylvain said.
While the million prizes for the second year are not yet known, Sylvain did say they have "plans for exciting new awards in 2008."
Renovations and Goings Ons at the World

Over at the Magic Kingdom, both Splash Mountain and the Frontierland Train Station will be receiving new themed synthetic and metal roofs. Also, the Emporium will be receiving additional ceiling lighting.
At the Studios, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster goes down for a month-long refurb on September 4th. Among the refurbishments being made, telecommunications cabling for surveillance cameras in the queue will be installed to better monitor the wait times. Also, a new smoke detection system will be furnished and installed. Keeping at the Studios, Playhouse Disney will be getting 2 screen walls while the fast food facility at Fantasmic will be relocated in the "berm."
Resort-wide, the 2nd floor lobby at the Wilderness Lodge will be refinished. 1780 air conditioners will be replaced at Port Orleans' guest rooms, 663 from 8/20-9/12 and 1117 from 1/7/08-2/9/08. New lighting will also be installed at the Polynesian's Trader Jacks while a new flooring system and carpeting will be installed at Disney Quest's 1st floor.

Disney Channel On Top
This past Friday, the Disney Channel pulled a feat that would have been unimaginable years ago. From 8-9:30pm, the Disney Channel not only ranked number one among all cable, but it topped every one of major networks to become the most watched channel during that time period. The 5.1 million viewers watching were viewing such popular sitcoms as "Hannah Montana," "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody" and "Cory in the House." Even more impressive than the fact that these were family comedies, was the fact that these shows targeted tweens, those kids and teens between 9 and 14 years old.
"The broadcast networks have created this crater-sized vacuum that we're only too happy to fill," Disney Channel President Gary Marsh says. "The classic sitcom has outlived all other forms of TV entertainment for a reason. Laughter is a great catharsis and never goes out of style.... The networks' abandonment of the sitcom has supplied us with a huge surplus of world-class writers and producers to bring to our network. It's made our shows that much better."
For the first time, three Disney Channel programs, "Hannah Montana," "The Suite Life..." and "That's So Raven", have been nominated for the children's program category at this year's prime time Emmy awards.
"We've been able to bring families together and bring back the whole notion of family viewing," Marsh points out. "We make sure with all of our shows that the programming entry point is the parents in the room." Or, as "Hannah Montana" executive producer Steven Peterman puts it, "We've set out to make a show that all kinds of kids could laugh at and parents could view without wanting to kill themselves."
Stamps for Magic
Four new Disney themed stamps will be entering the postal system this week. The theme of magic as imagined by Walt Disney and his studio animators is the last in the "Art of Disney" stamp series. Among these include:
- Dumbo and Timothy Mouse
- Peter Pan and Tinker Bell
- Mickey Mouse as The Sorcerer's Apprentice
- Aladdin and Genie
